Is your company car likely to be stolen?

The Association of Chief Police Officers Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service (AVCIS) has named the Ford Transit van as the most common vehicle to be stolen.

Hot on its heels is the Ford Fiesta, closely followed by the Vauxhall Astra and Vauxhall Corsa, which represent some of the most popular vehicles on the road.

There is only a 51% chance of recovering a stolen vehicle.

The top 10 most stolen vehicles of last year are:

1.Ford Transit
2.Ford Fiesta
3.Vauxhall Astra
4.Vauxhall Corsa
5.Volkswagen Golf
6.BMW 3-Series
7.Ford Escort
8.Ford Focus
9.Ford Mondeo
10.Vauxhall Vectra

“Due to the sheer number of these vehicles and the huge market for stolen parts, these cars are very popular with criminals,” said detective chief inspector

Mark Hooper, head of AVCIS.

“We are finding that vehicles registered in the late-1990s and early-2000s are among those most desired.

"The vehicles are stripped for parts, which are sold on the internet before the larger components are sold as scrap metal.”

Gordon Brown: letter & telephone call

Gordon Brown’s letter & telephone call

The recent furore over the Gordon Brown's handwritten note and his taped telephone conversation with the mother of a dead soldier should serve as a reminder to all of us that both written and verbal communication with clients and candidates always needs to be professionally handled otherwise our personal and company’s reputation suffer.

There is no doubt that the Prime Minister was well intentioned but if you can’t do something properly do not do it at all because there is a good chance you will make any problems worse.

With written communications (on paper or email) think carefully about the content and the desired result, make sure it is well presented and if in any doubt get a second opinion before sending.

With telephone calls you should always assume you are being taped i.e. don’t say anything that you wouldn’t feel happy about saying if you knew it would be published or broadcast.

It always pays to be careful as a good reputation take a long time to establish but can be lost in a moment.

Is Lord Sugar Right?

Is Lord Sugar right in his criticism of small firms as "moaners" who lived in "Disney World"?

As a recruiter who talks to many business owners I would agree with Lord Sugar in that a small minority (Lord Sugar quoted 15%) of those companies in financial difficulty do need insolvency advice rather than loans from the bank.

Companies who are still losing money more than 12 months after the recession began should have either reduced their costs and/or increased their sales by now to the point where they are at least breaking even.

If they are unable or unwilling to do that then they should look realistically at whether it is worth carrying on and increasing their level of debt or whether they should call it a day while they still have a choice.

It needs to be said, however, that those companies whose business model is still sound or those who have only a temporary cash flow issue should of course be able to access the cash injected into the banking system by the government quickly as the tax paid on profits made in the future will be crucial in dealing with the ongoing budget deficit crisis.

Tony Blair Presidential Election Hopes

If the EU used a search recruitment company to find its new President the best qualified candidate would undoubtedly be Tony Blair.

Given the role is high on influence and low on actual decision making the ex Prime Minster would be the ideal candidate given his approach to running Britain when he was in charge.

Add to this the high regard in which he is held in the US given his support of the wars in Iraq & Afghanistan and his recent work on the Middle East peace process, it is hard to see how anyone could be better qualified.

In recruitment terms he is the best candidate available and if he doesn’t get the job then the decision will have been taken on personal or political grounds rather than on capability.

Any head-hunter given the brief would have one name at the top - Tony Blair.
