Meet Stuart Platt, Director at Wallace Hind

A Journey in Recruitment: From Junior Consultant to Director

Like many in recruitment, my career in the field began somewhat unexpectedly. I initially pursued a career in journalism, which eventually led me into an internal sales role in advertising. From there, I transitioned to event sales before I found myself on the radar of Wallace Hind. In fact, they were the ones who got me to the offer stage with another company – but instead of accepting that offer, I chose to join Wallace Hind. It’s a decision I’ve never looked back on.

One of the things I value most about working in recruitment is the autonomy. I love managing my own desk, taking responsibility for my own progression, and charting my own career path. Starting as a junior consultant, I’m a testament to the opportunities that Wallace Hind offers for career growth and professional development. From progressing to Managing Consultant and Associate Partner, I now have the privilege of helping to run the business as a Director. It’s been an exciting journey, I just picked up the ball and I’m running with it!

A particular area I’ve found rewarding is working with engineering companies, especially owner / manager SME businesses. These businesses often face a complex and challenging recruitment landscape, and I take pride in the value we can bring by helping them negotiate through it.

In terms of building a successful career in recruitment, my advice is simple, do exactly what you say you’re going to do! Honesty is key. Setting realistic expectations and delivering high-quality service to both candidates and clients throughout the process is crucial.

Finally, it’s important to recognise your limitations and don’t oversell your expertise. Recruiters often get a bad reputation for over-promising and under-delivering. An honest, professional approach, along with a realistic appraisal of a client’s needs, goes a lot further than blind optimism and the classic “Sure, why not!” mentality.

Our mission at Wallace Hind is to be recognised and respected as a valued recruitment partner, with relationships found on trust, honesty and mutual respect. I firmly believe that success in recruitment, like any profession, comes from trust, transparency, and delivering on your promises.
