How Wallace Hind helped a European DIY products manufacturer recalibrate its search and appoint a UK Marketing Manager.
The Problem
Following significant growth and a contract to supply a substantial portfolio of branded products to the UK’s largest DIY multiple, the company needed an ambitious Marketing Executive or Marketing Manager to take overall responsibility for UK marketing activity. The role itself was attractive, but the location of the UK operation and the salary on offer narrowed the available talent pool. Based on the experience required, Wallace Hind advised that the package was below the level needed to attract the strongest candidates.
The Solution / What We Did
Wallace Hind had recruited for the group for more than 12 years and understood its UK and European stakeholders, including line management and HR. We agreed a staged eSearch campaign: test the original salary level first, then review the evidence and re-advertise at the higher level Wallace Hind had recommended if necessary. The first campaign generated 108 applications, with five candidates progressing to first interview and two meeting the European HR and Marketing leaders. That process confirmed the need for deeper DIY and retail-sector experience, so the campaign was rerun with the revised salary.
The Result
- 275 applications generated across the two recruitment campaigns.
- A focused first shortlist reduced 108 applicants to five first interviews and two second interviews.
- A recalibrated search attracted 167 applicants at the higher salary level, with four progressing to first interview and two to second interview.
- A successful appointment concluded with a formal offer being made and accepted.
